Description: Unusual example of a member of the Order Proetida, Family Otarionidae with many fine details present. While most frequently known in the trade as “Otarion”, this one is actually a member of the genus Cyphaspis. The most diagnostic features of this taxon are the high stalked eyes, elongated spines, and granulose bulbous cephalon. This one has been prepared in such a way that the axial spine is freestanding. Tere are a number of types of Cyphaspis to be found in Morocco, but many go unprepared as it is usually not economical to invest the amount of time to free them from the matrix. It is astonishingly similar to the one from Oklahoma named Cyphaspis carrolli after my good friend and master preparatory Bob Caroll.
