Brea Tar Sands FossilsDescription: Now this is certainly an interesting piece. A fossil dealer associate of mine picked up a flat of this Brea tar pit material from a local S. Californian collector with an excellent background in mammal physiology. On the far left is the long Tule elk rib bone. Next to it on the right is a calcaneus centrum vertebra. Just above to the right of the centrum is distal right humerus of a Lepus Californicus (Black-tailed Hare). All the bones are solidly entombed in the black tar. My understanding is that the quarrying and curating of bones from the Brea tar pits is quite a time consuming and tedious process. Needless to say, tar pit material from California is very rare. I also acquired two other matrix free large bones in this deal. One a 9” vertebrae, the other 7 ½” x 7 ½” hip bone (?). Please contact me if you are interested in, or, could be of assistance in identifying these bones.
