NobiliasaphusDescription: Valongo trilobites are easily recognized by their ghostly and other-worldly appearance. They are normally compressed, distorted, and the matrix has a slatey appearance. With these attributes, they are instantly recognizable. This one is part of a small batch of large and well-preserved specimens that I just procured. Personally, I include Valongo trilobites amongst some of my favorite species. This one is fully 3D, and has excellent presence. Note the pygidial spine. The species is quite uncommon and the first I have encountered.

This formation is a monotonous succession of marine silty mudrocks transformed into dark slate by low regional metamorphism.
