AsaphellusDescription: Valongo trilobites are easily recognized by their ghostly appearance. They are normally compressed, distorted, and the matrix has a slatey appearance. This positive and negative specimen is no exception. It is part of a small batch of large and well-preserved specimens that I just procured. Asaphellus toledanus is also one of the less common species from the Valongo. For the aforementioned reasons, these are amongst some of my favorite trilobites. This formation is a monotonous succession of marine silty mudrocks transformed into dark slate by low regional metamorphism.
