Description: Valongo trilobites are easily recognized by their ghostly and other-worldly appearance. They are normally compressed, distorted, and the matrix has a slatey appearance. With these attributes, they are instantly recognizable. This one is part of a small batch of large and well-preserved specimens that I just procured. Personally, I include Valongo trilobites amongst some of my favorite species. This one is fully 3D, has excellent presence, and is well centered on the plate. The species is quite uncommon and the first I have encountered.

This formation is a monotonous succession of marine silty mudrocks transformed into dark slate by low regional metamorphism. Please click this link to a website with extensive background on the Valongo Formation: http://fossilport.planetaclix.pt/triloval/introduction.htm.
