Minicryphaeus giganteus TrilobiteDescription: Elegant example of a member of the Order Phacopida, Family Acastidae with many fine details present. Notice the fine eye facets present on this specimen. The Asteropyginae recently have undergone revision. This one is something of a contradiction in Minicryphaeus giganteusterms, being assigned to the genus Minicryphaeus. It is fully triple the size of other members of the genus, and is given the oxymoronic species name giganteus which brings the term “jumbo shrimp” to mind. It has a distinctive rostrum present, as shown in the photos. The rich dark brown exoskeleton is well-contrasted to the beige matrix, and the freestanding preparation makes for a striking display. To see other trilobites whose rostrums would put Pinocchio to shame see my listings for Morocconites or Lanceaspis.
