Septimopeltis clementinaDescription: The location known as Jorf in Morocco has been a hotbed of new trilobite species for the past few years. Recently, specimens have been coming from a new site known as Fezna, some 10 km from the original site, now sometimes referred to as the Red Jorf site. This one is most like the trilobite known as Septimopeltis clementina. Styginids for some reason are prone to preservation of specimens with clear indications of predation. You can see several shortened pleural spines on both the left and right sides. Had this trilobite lived it may have had a full complement of long spines after an additional molt or two. The long pygidial spines have an upward curve at the distal ends, a feature the preparator has chosen to accentuate by making them freestanding. This one may well be a new genus and/or species yet to be described. I have included several in-preparation photos showing the specimen being freed from the matrix.
