Drotops megalomanicus subornatusDescription: This plate displays a dramatic example of a trilobite once termed “Phacops rana africanus”, now called Drotops megalomanicus. Phacops africanus is an entirely different trilobite (see my other offerings). This is an unusual example given its brick red color. Most members of the species that many are familiar with are black in color. The depositional environment was such that it was preserved in this striking red, possibly the result of secondary pyrite oxidation. It is the only example I have ever seen in 16 years.
