Fossil FernsDescription: The beautiful white frond appears to be a Neuropteris sp. The fronds are uncommon and quite desirable. It is surrounded by three or four other species. The whitish deposit on many of the specimens is the characteristic that defines St Clair fossils and makes them instantly recognizable. Pyrophyllite (aluminum silicate, a whitish mineral) is believed to have replaced the pyrite at a later stage as the sediments piled up and the temperature and pressure became greater. The plate is quite heavy at 16 pounds.
