Description: The large two specimens appear to be Alethopteris c.f. serlii. St. Clair ferns are renowned for their beauty and preservation. The whitish deposit on many of the specimens is the characteristic that defines St Clair fossils and makes them instantly recognizable. Pyrophyllite (aluminum silicate, a whitish mineral) is believed to have replaced the pyrite at a later stage as the sediments piled up and the temperature and pressure became greater.
