Fundulus Fish FossilDescription: There are two different species of Pliocene fish (3 m.y.o.) (the other being Gasterosteus doryssus (Stickleback) from the diatomaceous earth quarries surrounding Hazen and Fernley, Nevada. An interesting note concerning these fish species is that they are never found associated in the geological sequence of layers. Moreover, they are to the exception of an occasional bird feather or leaf (and a snake we donated to a museum in Utah), virtually the only fossils found at the quarries.

This specimen is exceptionally large and well preserved, with an attractive rust orange color. It will arrive mounted in an attractive 6 x 5” glass covered Riker Mount for protection. I highly advise you handle these as little as possible they are quite fragile. This one has a natural crack through the middle. It is stable within the Riker Mount, so be doubly careful about its removal.
