Kettneraspis Moroccan Trilobite
Order Lichida, Family Odontopleuridae
Time: Middle Devonian
is 25 mm long by 30 mm wide (with spines) on a 60 mm by 60 mm matrix
Fine example of the genus, this is a member of the genus Kettneraspis.
It comes from a relatively new location known as Jorf in Morocco,
close to the site from which the polished goniatite ammonites originate.
The preservation of the exoskeleton takes its rich rose/gray color
from minerals in the water that perfused it post deposition. It
is the first of the genus I have been able to secure, and is possibly
a new species like so many trilobites from this location. The longest
pleural spine on the left has been displaced to the rear, but the
preparatory decided to leave it in the as found state for authenticity’s
sake. See my other offerings for Kettneraspis
prepared by the incomparable Bob Carroll.
