Description: This spectacular ammonite is a Desmocveras latidorsatum from Madagascar which has been sgaitallysplit in half and polished to show the wonderful detail within. Some of the individual chambers are open and filled with rich mahogany-colored Calcite crystals, with the septa (divisions) between each chamber preserved as white Calcite, making for a superb display piece. Desmoceras is far less often seen than Cleoniceras (see my other postings), especially in such a large size. Notice how you can see the growth of the living chambers from the ting central umbilicus to the large final chambers at the end of this fine specimen. This is a fine example of an ammonite from the Albian (112 m.y.a) deposits of Madagascar, one that is sure to be a fine addition to any ammonite collection.
