Cordaites were primitive gymnospermous trees that went completely extinct millions of years ago leaving no descendants. This group included large trees as well as shrub-like plants. While cordaites are not rare, very rarely are leaf tips as here collected. Judging by the small size, this is likely to be from a bush-like variety. The collector of this specimen claims to have found but two such leaf tips among more than 1000 plant fossil specimens he has collected from this formation. The matrix also includes remnants of a Sphenopteris plant fossil.
