Among the dominant flora of the Carboniferous were the Sigilaria, elegant trees that grew to more than 100 feet tall with 3 foot diameter trunks. This specimen is the root of one of these ancient iocons of the coal swamps, coming from the Carbondale Formation in Illinois where the famous Mazon Creek lagerstatten is found.
