Fossil Amber Page: 1 Archive: 2

Fossil amber (or fossil resin or resinite) results from the polymerization (cross-linking of organic compounds with hydrogen bonds) of tree resin. The first resin producing trees were the fern trees that appeared in Devonian time when the first insects also appeared. The oldest insect inclusions occur in Cretaceous (dinosaur-age) amber. Over millions of years the efficiency of natural selection tinkered with tree resin and its production in various ways to evolve protective mechanisms. For example, resin is used to seal wounds, provide a protective barrier to insects and infection, and as a medium of delivery for chemicals the tree produces to combat insects. By the Cenozoic Era, trees were well adapted in their various uses of resin for defense. Polymerization that is temperature-sensitive occurs very rapidly in resins, with further polymerization slowing dramatically over time. Thus, the age of amber varies from the Holocene to the Cretaceous, though the older, the scarcer, is the general trend.

For description of the Orders of insects, see the fossil insect taxonomy page.
