Excellent Phacops rana milleri Trilobite

Phacops rana milleri

(Stewart 1927)

Trilobites Order Phacopida; Family Phacopidae

Geological Time: Middle Devonian

Size (25.4mm=1 inch): 43 mm

Fossil Site: Silica Shale Formation, Paulding, Ohio

Phacops rana milleriA mid-sized, pristine example of popular trilobite from Ohio. The quarry site is long been closed to collecting. As a result, these Phacops only become available as old collections are liquidated. The Ohio Phacops is particularly well known for its Schizochroal eyes that are found only in some Phacopida. This type of trilobite eye typically has fewer lenses, but they are much larger. Each lens is separated and has an individual cornea. The picture attests to the unusual "crystal eyes" of this Phacopid and its superb preservation.
