Cave Bear Hing Paw FossilA fine example of the pes (hind paw) of the huge cave bear Ursus spelaeus that lived during the Pleistocene between 300,00 and 10,000 years ago. Cave bears were in excess of 3 meters tall when they stood on their hind legs, making it easy to understand why our ancestors revered them. Like humans, cave bears had a plantigrade walking habit, meaning that they walked flat-footed. The phalanges have been strung on wire, making for an articulated museum-quality display.
