Macropodid Fossil JawsDescription: Bettongia leseur is still extant today, and is known as the Bettong, or Boodie. They once were the most common macropodid on the continent of Australia, but are now restricted to a few small islands and a minuscule portion of the mainland at Shark Bay. The Macropodids first make their appearance in the fossil record in the late Miocene, but exhibit little diversity before the early Pliocene about 4 – 5 million years ago as a consequence of expansion of savannah and woodland habitats at that time. This specimen consists of one side of both the maxilla (upper jaw) and mandible (lower jaw) of a rarely offered taxon made more desirable by virtue of the fact that it comes from an area where the remains of early humans have been found in the past.
