Fossil Wolf SkullDescription: This skull comes from a Canid known as Canis falconeri. It is a large relative of the wolf, which along with several other member of the genus replaced several large Hyaenas in Europe during what was known as the "wolf event". It was what is termed a "hypercarnivore", meaning that it derived over 70% of its nutrition from meat. It was a large canid similar in size to the modern wolf. The forelimbs indicate it was similar in habits to the modern-day Lycaon pictus, also known as the Cape Hunting Dog which is known as a cursorial predator capable of running down swift prey. This example is well-preserved, and includes several cervical vertebrae in articulation.
