Asaphus platyurusDescription: Coming from the Middle Ordovician deposits of the Wolchow River region near Saint Petersburg, Russia, this is an example of the unusual trilobite Asaphus (Subasaphus) platyurus. It is known for the dramatically-curved genal spines. Its dark caramel-colored Calcite shell is well set off by the white limestone matrix, with the trilobite well positioned on its nearly half billion year old seafloor throne. This particular example has been prepared ventrally to allow you to see the detail from within. Notice the hypostome, or anchor for the mouthparts. This type of hypostome is typical of the predatory types of trilobites. This is only the SECOND ventrally-prepared example I have been able to secure in 9 years.
