Carbonifeous Horsetail Plant FossilDescription: This is an example of a scouring rush or horsetail. The specimen consists of several sections much like bamboo with a whorl of needles evident. The extant Equisetales are represented by the single genus Equisetum. Fossil examples are often denoted by the name Equisites. Whichever name is used, they are a mere shadow of the immense Equisetales that existed in the Carboniferous, some of which grew to be in excess of 10 meters tall. This is part of a faurly large example of the ancestor of the longest-lived vascular plant. Photography is somewhat difficult given the slight difference in reflective ability of the plant relative to the coal matrix.
