Pycnodont Fish ToothDescription: A rarely seen member of the Pycnodont fishes, this one is an example of a tooth plate of what must have been a large specimen. The family derives its name from the Greek for “thick tooth”. These fish led a durophagous existence, crushing the shells of shellfish and crustaceans. Few examples of this unusual specimen are seen, and even fewer of the degree of preservation seen here.
