Ctenothrissa Fish Fossil with Dramatic Finnage

Description: A fine example of the Order Ctenothrissiformes, Family Ctenothrissidae, Ctenothrissa is thought to have been a fish that lived within the coral reefs of the time. This one is well-centered on its Sublithographic limestone matrix, with the dramatic dorsal, pectoral, and ventral fins in a fine state of preservation. What makes this one notable is that even some of the musculature has been preserved, remarkable in a specimen nearly 100 million years old. The genus died out during the Upper Cretaceous, leaving no descendants. This is the largest example of this spectacular taxon that I have had to offer in several years.
