Pycnodont Fossil FishDescription: A rarely seen member of the Pycnodont fishes, this one is Paleobalistum. The family derives its name from the Greek for “thick tooth”. These fish led a durophagous existence, crushing the shells of shellfish and crustaceans. Few examples of this unusual fish are offered, and even fewer of such size and degree of preservation. While there are repaired cracks to the matrix as a result of collection, this one is all natural (no paint to enhance fin rays). The genus went extinct in the Eocene.
