Charitosomus hakelensisA rarely seen member of the Order Gonorynchiformes, Family Gonorynchidae, it is a member of the bony fishes known as a “sand fish” due to its similarity to the modern-day sandfish Gonorynchus. They presumably were bottom dwellers that preyed upon animals that lived in the sand at the sea floor. For another putative member of the Gonorynchidae that was far, far larger (and far, far younger), see my Green River fish for Notogoneus.
