Amiiformes Fish FossilDescription: This specimen is a member of the Amiiformes, an order of fish to which the modern bowfin Amia calva belongs. The Amiiformes are primitive ray-finned fish that trace their ancestry back to the time of the dinosaurs. This on is preserved in lateral aspect with many fine details preserved. Note the long dorsal fin for which the order is well known, and the well-preserved vertebral column. Specimens from locations like this have only been known for about ten years, and have only recently become commercially available. This one may well be new to science.
