Propterus Museum Fish Fossil from world-famous Solnhofen LagerstätteDescription: This is a fine example of a Macrosemiid fish from the lithographic limestone deposits of Eichstatt, Germany, known as Propterus microstomus. These 150 million year old deposits are famous for their exceptionally well-preserved organisms, the most famous of which are the handful of specimens of the ancient bird Archaeopteryx. That degree of preservation is evidenced here in the fact that the teeth, scales, and fin rays can be easily seen. The flaglike dorsal distinguishes this from another species, Propterus elongatus. It is a well-prepared example, looking more like a work of art than a fossil some 150 million years old, oe that is sure to become a cornerstone of any collection.
