Scytalocrinus decadactylusDescription: The large crinoid is a fine example of an Inadunate Cladid crinoid (Family Scytalocrinidae) known as Scytalocrinus decadactylus from the famous Crawfordsville crinoid beds. Preservation on this specimen is remarkably complete, down to the fine pinnules on the arms. What is most interesting about this specimen is that several of the arms show evidence of regeneration. While two have just the tips regrown, one arm shows nearly 1/3 of its length having been regenerated. There are two smaller crinoids present as well. The one in the lower right of the first photo is an example of the genus Onychocrinus. While only the faintest hint of its stem seems attached, there is a section seen directly below the Scytalocrinus which may belong to it (see the “bump’ in the matrix which appears to lead back to the Onychocrinus). Finally, is seen on the reverse is a member of the Decadocrinididae known as Lanecrinus depressus, formerly called Dacadocrinus depressus, making for a wonderful example of the diverse morphologies these wonderful echinoderms exhibited. This plaque is another set of the very 3-D preserved crinoids for which the Crawfordsville deposits are well known.
