Description: This spectacular ammonite is known as Craspedites nodiger. The individual chambers are preserved as dark gray Calcite crystals, with the septa (divisions) between each chamber preserved as black Calcite, making for a superb display piece. The intricate suturing which provided strength for the shell at low weight expense, an important feature for an animal which relied on near neutral buoyancy to allow it to move freely throughout the water column is readily seen here. It is this delicate suturing for which these ammonites are well known. See my other offerings for examples which have been split to show the detail within, as well as some on matrix. This is a fine example of an ammonite from the Tithonian Stage (150 m.y.a) deposits of Russia, one that is sure to be a welcome addition to any ammonite collection.
