Description: The fossil show in Tucson is the first place that many unusual and novel fossil specimens come to light, and this spectacular ammonite and a few others like it I was able to secure are a case in point. A spectacular ammonite is a Cleoniceras besairei from Madagascar which has been split in half and polished to show the wonderful detail within. Some of the individual chambers are open and filled with rich black colored Calcite crystals, with the septa (divisions) between each chamber preserved as white Calcite, making for a superb display piece with a striking geode-like appearance. The rich color is most likely a result of infusion of the deposit with Manganese, affording the unusual black and deep brown specimens you see here. This is a fine example of an ammonite from the Albian (112 m.y.a) deposits of Madagascar, one that is sure to be a fine addition to any ammonite collection.
