Green River Wasp FossilDescription: This 50 million year old, Eocene-Era fossil insect comes from one of the world's famous Laggerstatten, the Green River Formation in Wyoming. A small portion of the fish fossils from Green River exhibits such fine preservation. The significant extent of soft-tissue preservation that makes the site famous is evident in this specimen. Insects are more commonly seen from the Green River Deposits of Utah and Colorado than from Fossil Lake. Nevertheless some 100 varieties of insects are known. Some have preserved color patterning and venation as seen here. This is the FIRST example of a wasp I have been able to secure in over 10 years. I do not expect it will remain available for long.
