Crocodile FossilDescription: This is a fine example of a jaw section from a crocodyliform thought to be Sarcosuchus. Sarcosuchus is not a crocodile, but a relation. The genus was named by Paul Sereno from material discovered in Niger. This 13 meter long monster was thought to have included dinosaurs on its menu. Notice the diagnostic texture of the bone evident in this fine specimen, as well as the good preservation of the enamel, making for a wonderful example of this rarely-seen Archosaur. The most interesting feature to me lies within the third tooth which has been broken off, revealing the growing tooth within. In order to keep their teeth fully functional, they were frequently replaced, with the new tooth pushing the old out as it grew. This is why teeth are the most commonly seen reptile fossil.
