Koneprusia sp (?)

Trilobites Order Odontopleurida, Family Odontopleuridae

Geological Time: Middle Devonian

Size (25.4 mm  = 1 inch): Harpes trilobite: 28 mm long by 22 mm wide Odontopleurid trilobite: 23 mm long by 18 mm wide (counting spines) on a 65 mm by 30 mm by 75 mm tall matrix

Fossil Site: Jorf, Morocco

Fossil Code: 17029

Price: $1495.00

Description: This specimen from Jorf is unusual for several reasons. First, it displays two different orders of trilobites on the same plate, preserved on two separate planes of the matrix. Second, both of them are a different color, a result of differential uptake of minerals during deposition and subsequent exposure to minerals in the ground water. It is a NATURAL association, not a composite. I include a video taken during preparation. Note that the Harpes evidently had a bad day several hundred million years ago. There is pathology to the right side of the cephalic rim. The balance of the posterior of the head shield is NOT buried in the matrix. Note the distortion to the right anterior edge as well. The trilobite survived the attack, only to die at some later date. While the Odontopleurid looks more to me like a member of the genus Isoprusia, the fact that there is a small central pygidial spine would be more likely in a member of the genus Koneprusia. Whatever the case this is a very unusual association plate.
