Charitopsis Cretaceous Lebanese Sand Fish Fossil

Charitopsis spinosus

Order Gonorynchiformes; Family Gonorynchidae

Geological Time: Middle Cretaceous, Cenomanian Stage (~95 mya)

Size: 80 mm

Fossil Site: Lebanese Lagerstatte, Haqel, Lebanon

A rarely seen member of the Order Gonorynchiformes, Family Gonorynchidae, it is a member of the bony fishes known as a “sand fish” due to its similarity to the modern-day sandfish Gonorynchus. There are 5 fossil genera comprising the Gonorychidae, 2 of which I am offering from the Cretaceous of Lebanon (see also Charitosomus). They all presumably were bottom dwellers that preyed upon animals that lived in the sand at the sea floor. For another putative member of the Gonorynchidae that was far, far larger (and far, far younger), see my Green River fish for Notogoneus.
