Cleoniceras AmmoniteDescription: This spectacular ammonite is a Cleoniceras besairei from Madagascar which has been sagitally split in half and polished to show the wonderful detail within. Some of the individual chambers are open and filled with a rich array of beige gray and brown Calcite crystals, with the septa (divisions) between each chamber preserved as gray Calcite, making for a superb display piece. In addition some of the chambers are open geode fashion, allowing you to see the crystalline detail within. Additionally, the exterior portion of one side display the intricate suture pattern which was the ammonite’s way of increasing strength without excess weight, a feature important to an animal that needed to freely move between levels of the water column. This is a fine example of an ammonite from the Albian (112 m.y.a) deposits of Madagascar, one that is sure to be a fine addition to any ammonite collection when you consider it is easily twice the size of many offered today. The larger examples are much harder to come across, and few equal this in quality.
