Description: This fine example shows a very detailed beetle who became covered by fine silt. The Green River Formation deposits of Wyoming, Colorado, and Utah are best known for their immaculately preserved fish, but other examples are known as well, as this specimen attests. This is a member of the largest family of beetles, the weevils. They are commonly called snout beetles, and typically feed on plants. Weevils are known to "play possum," falling to the ground motionless until the threat has passed. Notice the exceptional preservation to this specimen. Even the dimpled elytra (wing covers) and eye can be seen. There is even a twig and leaf fragment preserved as well. You would be hard put to find a better example at such a reasonable price.
