Description: The Green River Formation deposits of Wyoming, Colorado, and Utah are best known for their immaculately-preserved fish, but other examples are known as well, as this specimen attests. These ten ants looks most like the Carpenter Ants of today, and this plate is a fine example of the type of preservation seen in these 50 million year old insects. Notice also the many plant impressions found as well.
