Description:
Twenty years ago a new site for lower Turonian stage fossil fish
was discovered in Morocco at a site known as Goulmima on the southern
side of the Atlas Mountains. The specimens were found in nodules
much like those found in roughly contemporaneous deposits in Brazil.
The presence of ammonites of the genus Mammites showed the deposits
to be marine and helped to date the material as well. This one
shows the jaws, skull, and anterior portion of the body of a pachyrhizodonthid
whose genus name is derived from the location and whose species
name is derived from the name of a researcher who made substantial
contributions to the knowledge of Moroccan ichthyofauna. This one
has split in such a way that the bulk of the specimen is contained
in one half of the nodule. It is essentially in as found state
with no modifications. While the jaws with teeth are the most prominent
features, the operculum and many scales are visible, along with
the general outline of the body, making this a unique example of
the ichthyofauna of the Moroccan Cretaceous. Reference: CR Acad. Sci. Paris, t321, Serie IIa, pp 1049-1054,
