 Description:
This plate from the John Day Fossil Beds in Oregon has two nice Metasequoia
fronds. Also called dawn redwood, the metasequoia genus was believed
extinct until 1944 when the first living specimens were discovered
in China. For this reason, dawn redwood is sometimes termed a
living fossil. Metasequoia fossils are known from the Cretaceous
to Pliocene from numerous North American plant fossil sites.
There are also small springs of another conifer, taxodium, a
cypress.

a very old collection, some 50 to 60
years
old, the
plant fossil
collection of a husband and wife
who combed more than 100 plant fossil sites, almost all of them
west of the
Mississippi River.
