Niobe laeviceps Russian trilobiteDescription: Here is an Asaphid trilobite that few collectors have heard of, much less seen. Coming from the Lower Ordovician Wolchovian Level deposits of the Wolchow River region near Saint Petersburg, Russia, this is an example of the trilobite known as Niobe laeviceps. It has the flattened distal edge of the pygidium, and the lack of terrace lines distinguishes it from the congeric Niobe schmidti (see my other offerings for an example). Few examples of this taxon have been offered, and none at such an affordable price, placing this rare species within reach of many avid collectors of trilobites from the Ordovician of Russia.
