Limnobiophyllum scutatum Plant FossilsDescription: This is an rare find for the specialist collector of Green River fossil flora. The genus is related to the modern “duckweed”. These plants are very simple, lacking an obvious stem or leaves. The greater Lemnoideaepart of each plant is a small organized "thallus" or "frond" structure only a few cells thick, often with air pockets that allow it to float on or just under the water surface. This genus is known from the Paleocene of Alberta and appears to have died out in the Miocene.

The Green River Formation holds one of the world’s richest depositories of fossil leaves, plants, vines and aquatic vegetation. My provider alone shows over seventy species he collects. Surely there are many more found. Not only is the variety of plant life phenomenal, the preservation is often superb. The Green River fossils I am offering are collected with the permission of the property owner on privately held land.
