Oxypteriscus Paleozoic Fish FossilDescription: Approximately seven years ago a number of Carboniferous fish from Siberia appeared on the market for a year or two. Then they suddenly became unavailable. So I was pleasantly surprised to discover three specimens of two different fish at the Tucson Gem and Mineral Show this February. With the species name being minimus, it is obvious these were small sized fish. The detail is very good, showing the scales, head and tail features. Now here is a rare treat from a distant and obscure locality. The paleoniscoids were the first ray-finned fish, a feature readily seen here. Some 40 or more families appeared during the Carboniferous and Permian Periods.
