Description:
This plaque of amber displays a most uncommon inclusion, commonly
called a Firefly or Lightning Bug. Actually it is a member of the
Order Coleoptera or Beetles, and is a member of the Family Lampyridae.
The males fly at night, using their chemical lights to signal the
females. Each species has a distinctive signal based upon the duration
and intervals of flashes. The light is produced by the combination
of two chemicals: luciferin and luciferase. Fireflies are a most
uncommon inclusion. In over 6,000 amber pieces, this is only my
SECOND. It is 8 mm in overall length. There is another tiny beetle
and an elongate springtail present as well.
