Priscacara liopsDescription: An extinct member of the perch, Family Priscacaridae, the name Priscacara means "primitive head". Shaped rather like a sunfish, the genus sports sturdy, protective dorsal and anal spines.

This is a medium sized adult size specimen with remarkable preservation of the backbone, head and adjoining fins. Of special note are the thick well-defined spines and skin. It is a deep chocolate color, indicative of the 18” layer. This is the horizon from which the best -preserved fish are found. This fossil would make an excellent centerpiece or decorative addition to your collection, office or home.

The best-preserved fish come from the 18-inch layer. Because the sediment is highly laminated, the fish can often be removed nearly whole. This layer, in the area near Fossil Butte, does indeed average about 18 inches in thickness. These fish exhibit a dark chocolate color and must be meticulously prepared for presentation.
