Description: This 50 million year old, Eocene-Era fossil fish comes from one of the world's famous Laggerstatten, the Green River Formation in Wyoming. A small portion of the fish fossils from Green River exhibits such fine preservation. The significant extent of soft-tissue preservation that makes the site famous is evident in this specimen.
This one is Amia fragosa, a fossil relative of the modern bowfin Amia calva. It is extremely rare, with only a few complete examples known. It is even more rare than the gar, and highly prized by collectors. I was able to obtain this fine specimen at this year’s fossil show in Tucson. It is the first I have seen on offer in quite a while. Note the exceptional detail in the fins, teeth and scales preserved in this almost 50 million year old example. The rarity, size, and detail to this fine specimen command a high price, but one well worth it to the avid collector
