Coming
from the Lower Carboniferous (C3 level) deposits of the Wolchow
River region near Saint Petersburg, Russia, this is an example a
quartet of the EXCEEDINGLY RARE Proetid trilobites Griffithides
corona. The trilobites themselves are all enrolled, and are up to
0.9 inches long and 0.5 inches across at the dramatic genal spines
(some repair to the delicate spines is evident). Very few of these
are ever offered. What is unusual about these trilobites is that
they are over 100 million years younger than the Asaphids commonly
offered for sale. The Proetida survived up until the Permian extinction
which brought down the curtain on 300 million years of trilobite
existence, along with the extinction of 90% of ALL species alive
at the time. These survivors would definitely not be voted off the
island. Whatever else you call this example, it is SUPERB! The cream-colored
exoskeletons are well set off by the white limestone matrix which
is 4.9 inches by 2.2 inches. As always, the skillful Russian preparators
have shown this fine 3-D specimen to best advantage.
