This type of ammonite from the Canadian Rocky Mountains ranks among the most remarkable of fossil remains. Mineral exchange during fossilization resulted in the formation of aragonite, primarily calcium carbonate, the same mineral from which pearls are made. Ammonites of this type are often called ammolites in recognition of the shell considered to comprise a rare gemstone (search the Internet for ammolite to verify the gem-stone status). The formation of origin in Canada has been dated to about 70 million years ago. The surface, depending on light and angle, glows red, green, purple and other hues.
