Sphenodiscus AmmoniteThis is an incredibly artistic ammonite, professionally prepared using air abrasion equipment. This Upper Cretaceous specimen is a superb example of Sphenodiscus lenticulares. It comes from the U.S. badlands, Fox Hills formation, South Dakota where ammonites like this are found in large nodules.

The collector was also the preparator in this case and took great pride in this work of art. Truly a wonderful display specimen, not polished, but rather prepared to reveal all the aspects of Nature's design in the underlying sutures that weave an intricate pattern of the animals growth within chambers of the shell. In this case a portion of the iridescent outer shell also remains on the front and all of the back that evidences an oxygen free, low acidity environment that enabled the fine preservation.

Sphenodiscus lenticulares is considered to have been a fast swimmer.
