Orthoceras and AmmonitesThis beautiful hand-polished plate has four fossil animals, three ammonites and an Orthoceras. An array of earth tone colors are exhibited making for an attractive display fossil for home or office.

Ammonites are an extinct group of marine animals (Phylum: Mullusca; Class: Cephalopoda; Subclass: Ammonoidea) Their closest living relative is probably the modern nautilus that they resemble. The ammonite shell contained a series of progressively larger chambers divided by thin walls called septa, with only the last and largest chamber occupied by the living animal. Ammonites first appeared in the late Silurian some 400 million years ago and became extinct at the close of the Cretaceous along together with the dinoaurs some 65 million years ago.

Orthoceras is a Nautiloid that appeared in the Silurian that are ancestral to the modern day squid. Ranging in size from a few inches to over six feet long, they could either swim or crawl the ocean floor.
